Yoga To Let Go Of Fear | Abhinivesha

Discovering the Fears that Hold Us Back

Today, let’s have a heart-to-heart about our fears, because guess what? I’m diving into the deep end and sharing mine first. You see, a lot of what I fear is wrapped up in regret. It’s that sinking feeling of not fully living or experiencing everything life has to offer.

For me, experiences are like precious drops of soul fuel that ignite that sense of awe and wonder. I crave to touch the divine, to explore what’s truly possible. Now, some folks have said that I’m never satisfied, and that I should be content. But I feel like that’s just playing into their fear of change, you know?

They ask themselves all those “what ifs”:

  • What if it doesn’t work out?

  • What if she loses what she’s got?

  • It will be difficult. She won’t know how to do it.

  • If it doesn’t turn out well, what’s going to happen?

  • If it turns out well, what’s going to happen?

  • What will it cost?

Gosh, it’s like a never-ending loop of worry, and I’m sure many of you can relate. But you know what, my friends? If we want to reach new heights, if we want to embrace what’s possible, we’ve got to make friends with fear. Yeah, I know, easier said than done, but the ancient Yogis had something to say about this too. They called it Abinevesha—a term that encapsulates our fear of change and clinging to what’s familiar, even if it’s no longer serving us.

Now, you don’t need to be a seasoned Yogi or even practice yoga to understand that fear can be a giant obstacle to growth in all aspects of life—whether it’s personal, physical, or spiritual. It’s not just the outcome we fear; it’s all those underlying anxieties that pop up when we dare to step out of the status quo.

The fear of rejection, ridicule, or losing support—it’s terrifying because we’re social creatures, and belonging is a big deal. But here’s the thing, my dear ones, I’ve come to realise that not taking that next right action, not leaning into that experience that calls to us from within, now that’s an even bigger fear for me. Call it intuition, call it a hunch, call it a dream—it’s that inner calling that we need to follow, no matter the doubts or the risks.

The Path to New Possibilities

So how do we face these fears head-on? Well, that’s where the wisdom of Yoga comes in, my friends. Here are five practical ways to get cozy with change and show fear who’s boss in your everyday life:

  1. Recognize Impermanence: Embrace the fact that everything around us is impermanent—the changing seasons, fleeting emotions, and ever-evolving situations. Realizing this helps us release our grip on the past and open our hearts to new possibilities.

  1. Practice Gratitude: Make gratitude your daily ritual. It shifts your perspective from dwelling on what’s gone to cherishing what’s here and now—the people, the moments, and the experiences that shape our lives.

  1. Step out of Your Comfort Zone: It’s time to shake things up! Challenge yourself with new hobbies, take a different route to work, or engage in social activities outside your usual circle. Embracing change builds resilience and eases that fear of endings.

  1. Embrace Change as an Opportunity: Instead of dreading endings, see them as doors to growth and renewal. Each closure opens up new beginnings and fresh adventures. Embrace change as a chance to learn and evolve.

  1. Practice Mindfulness: Bring mindfulness into your everyday life. Live fully in the present, free from dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. It helps you stay centered and calm in the face of change.
