Purify with the Elements

purifying energy with yoga

Yes, it’s already the final week of January! Where did it go eh? Let’s not waste time and dive into the exploration of the elements—Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. These aren’t just abstract concepts; they are the building blocks of your body, your energy, and your practice. In the framework of Hatha Yoga, understanding the elements can help us recognise imbalances and find ways to purify and restore harmony.

Why the Elements Matter

In the ancient science of Ayurveda, the sister discipline of yoga, the elements represent qualities within us. Think of them as filters that influence how we feel, think, and act. When one element dominates or is out of sync, it can show up in ways that hold us back—whether that’s sluggishness (Earth), emotional overwhelm (Water), restlessness (Air), or even burnout (Fire).

But here’s the thing: you can work with these elements through your practice. When you align with the qualities of each, you can bring yourself back to a place of balance and calm. And in the process, you purify not just your energy but your ability to live a life that’s purposeful and connected.

The Journey Through Moon, Sun, and Fire

Hatha Yoga aligns the elements with three primary stages of practice: Moon (Earth and Water), Sun (Air and Space), and Fire (all five elements balanced). These stages correspond to the gradual unfolding of your potential—from grounding and stabilizing to energising and transforming.

MOON | Earth and Water

Moon practices are calming and nurturing. They focus on grounding and settling, which can be especially helpful if you feel unsteady or overwhelmed. By touching in on the senses of taste and smell, we activate innate qualities of calm and receptivity.

In your practice: Think restorative yoga, long-held poses, and slow, deliberate breathing. Poses like Child’s Pose (Balasana) and Forward Fold (Paschimottanasana) can help anchor you.

SUN | Air and Space

Sun practices are energising and uplifting. They tap into the lighter, more expansive qualities within us, helping us feel inspired and joyful. By activating the senses of hearing and touch, we stimulate openness and a sense of possibility.

In your practice: This is where dynamic flows and breathwork come in. Poses like Warrior II (Virabhadrasana II) and Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) can help awaken these qualities.

FIRE | All Elements Balanced

Fire practices are transformative. They bring all the elements into harmony and ignite your innate potential for growth. When fire is balanced, we feel strong, determined, and ready to step into our power.

In your practice: Core-strengthening poses like Boat Pose (Navasana) and energizing pranayama techniques like Kapalabhati can stoke this inner fire.

How the Elements Support Purification

Each element offers a unique path to purification:

  • Earth: Builds stability and detoxifies through grounding practices.
  • Water: Cleanses emotional residue and cultivates flow.
  • Fire: Burns away impurities and drives transformation.
  • Air: Clears mental clutter and opens the space for inspiration.
  • Space: Expands your perspective and connects you to the infinite.

By working with these elements, you’re not just practicing yoga; you’re rewiring your entire system. And when your inner elements are balanced, the outer chaos of life becomes a little easier to navigate.
