Why Breath Matters 

If you’re new to yoga (or just curious about how it can help you get through life without wanting to scream into a pillow every five minutes), let me break it down for you. 

Your breath is the control centre of your nervous system. 

  • Feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed? Your breath speeds up, sparking your body’s “fight or flight” response. 
  • Feeling calm, relaxed, or ready to Netflix and chill? Your breath slows down, signalling your body to rest, digest, and restore. 

Here’s the kicker: while you can’t always control the chaos around you (looking at you, traffic jams and looming deadlines), you can control your breath. And when you control your breath, you influence your body and mind in ways that go far beyond just “taking a deep breath” when your boss is being annoying. 

 

The Breath’s Hidden Superpower 

Breathwork is a bit like finding the secret settings on your phone—it’s always been there, but once you figure out how to use it properly, it changes the game. 

Let’s look at what happens when you consciously use your breath: 

  1. You can calm down fast. 
    Ever feel like your heart’s racing and your thoughts are spinning out of control? Slowing your breath signals your nervous system to pump the brakes and chill out. 
  1. You can energise when you need it. 
    On the flip side, quick, intentional breathing patterns can wake you up better than a double espresso. (Yes, really.) 
  1. You can focus and get creative. 
    Deep, mindful breathing boosts oxygen flow to the brain, clearing the mental fog and sparking those “aha!” moments. 
  1. You can actually feel good. 
    With every inhale, you’re feeding your body life-giving prana (energy), and with every exhale, you’re letting go of what no longer serves you. That’s celebration-worthy, don’t you think?

Here’s why we’re starting with the breath this month: because it’s the foundation of everything. Whether you’re tackling a tricky yoga pose, dealing with a stressful situation, or just trying to survive the madness of December, your breath is your go-to.
