Be Brave: Focus—Where Your Attention Goes, Energy Flows
Alright, we’re three weeks into this Be Brave journey, and I need to ask… have you noticed yet how much your mind loves a good faff?
You step onto the mat, and suddenly—boom!—your brain is an unskippable highlight reel of to-do lists, petty arguments, and whether you locked the front door (you did). Your focus? Nowhere to be found.
And let’s be honest, this isn’t just happening in yoga. The same scattered energy is showing up when you pick up your phone instead of finishing that project. Or when you say you’re going to eat something nourishing but somehow find yourself halfway through a pack of biscuits you don’t even remember opening.
So, this week, we’re talking about focus. Because if you don’t direct your energy with intention, you’ll waste it. And wasted energy is the difference between a life that feels aligned, powerful, and full of possibility… and one that feels like you’re constantly wading through treacle.
Why Focus is a Game-Changer in Yoga (and in Life)
Yoga, done properly, is a system designed to refine and direct your energy. You don’t just move your body about for the sake of it—every posture, every breath, every tiny adjustment is about developing control and clarity.
And focus? That’s what separates a practice that actually changes you from one that’s just an hour of glorified stretching.
Because when your focus is dialed in:
🔥 You don’t burn out on distractions.
🔥 You stop second-guessing every decision.
🔥 You become the type of person who follows through.
That last one? That’s the big one. Because nothing kills progress like constantly stopping to question whether you’re doing it right.
So, How Do You Actually Train Focus?
This week in the studio, we’re using three postures to physically train focus (and, trust me, it’s not just about the poses—it’s about what happens in your mind while you’re in them).
- Crow Pose (Bakasana) – Stabilise Your Power
Ever tried balancing on your hands with your knees wedged into your triceps? It’s basically the yoga equivalent of trying to text while holding three shopping bags. You cannot be in Crow and be thinking about what’s for dinner. You have to be present. That’s the point.
- Dancing Warrior (Natarajasana) – Cultivate Your Power
A standing balance that requires laser-sharp attention and a bit of sass. You’re learning to stretch beyond what feels safe without losing your centre. That’s focus in action.
- Headstand (Sirsasana) – Harness Your Power
The ultimate lesson in presence. Inverting your perspective forces you to focus because if you don’t? You’re rolling out of it like a rogue tumbleweed.
And here’s the best bit—what you learn on the mat doesn’t stay on the mat. When you train yourself to focus in practice, you train yourself to focus in life.
Where’s Your Focus Right Now?
And I don’t just mean right this second. I mean in the bigger picture.
Are you focusing on what’s actually moving you forward? Or are you pouring energy into things that keep you stuck?
A little self-inventory:
❌ Are you spending more time worrying than taking action?
❌ Are you waiting to ‘feel ready’ instead of just starting?
❌ Are you letting your past failures dictate your current choices?
If you answered yes to any of those, it’s time to pull focus. Because if you don’t decide where your energy goes, something else will decide for you.
Bringing it Back to the Traditional Teachings
The ancients weren’t messing about when they said: where your attention goes, your energy flows.
In Tantric Hatha Yoga, we train focus through breath (pranayama), gaze (drishti), and unwavering commitment to what we’re doing in the present moment. That’s how you stop your energy leaking out into a million different distractions and actually use it to build something powerful.
And let me tell you—when you start to focus like this? Life starts to work. Things align. You feel less like you’re being pulled in a hundred directions and more like you’re driving your own damn car.
